Identify the question and the relevant system

Write a short description of the issue, the parties, and the outcome you hope to achieve. Include any approaching hearing, notice, or signing date. Explain whether the matter involves mainland Dubai, a particular free zone, another emirate, or another country. A Dubai address alone does not determine the applicable law, regulator, or forum, and the adviser needs those details before recommending a route.

Check professional registration carefully

The Government of Dubai Legal Affairs Department maintains a directory of registered advocates and legal consultants and licensed firms. Search the exact professional and firm names, and seek clarification from the Department if details are uncertain. The directory does not rank specialists or endorse a provider. Treat registration as one check, alongside relevant experience and a clear explanation of the proposed assignment.

Clarify who can provide each service

Ask whether the engagement involves advice, document drafting, negotiation, or court representation. A legal consultant and an advocate do not necessarily have identical rights of audience, and registration requirements can differ between forums. If another professional will conduct proceedings, establish who that person is and how responsibility will be shared. Avoid assuming that an international title automatically authorises every local litigation service.

Agree on scope, cost, and communication

Request a written explanation of the work included, the fee structure, likely disbursements, and tasks that would require a new agreement. Translation, attestation, filing, and expert work can create separate costs. Identify your usual contact and the method for sending sensitive records. Ask how updates and important decisions will be communicated, particularly if you are outside the UAE during the engagement.

Make the first meeting efficient

Prepare identity and entity details, a factual chronology, and the key contracts, notices, and payment records. Include material that may complicate your position. Tell the adviser which originals you hold and which documents were issued abroad. Finish by confirming the next task, the person responsible, and the timing. A careful preliminary assessment is more useful than a promise of a guaranteed result.

Bring the details together

Before your next step.

  • A short description of the matter and all urgent dates.
  • Verified professional and firm names, with the intended role clear.
  • An engagement note covering fees, scope, and separate expenses.
  • A chronological file and agreed next steps.
